Carnival is celebrated on every Island of the archipelago — and Boa Vista is no exception. The most anticipated event of the year, Cape Verdeans take to the streets for three days before Ash Wednesday to celebrate in an explosion of colour.
Dubbed one of the three most tropical carnivals in the world, along with Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago, the festival is a fusion of Brazilian, Caribbean, and African influences — not to mention the Island’s Portuguese heritage.

Cape Verde is made up of two groups of islands; The Barlavento Islands and The Sotavento Islands. The Barlavento Islands are made up of seven islands, and Sal is the most popular to buy property on. At first glance, the terrain of Sal makes it look like a desolate planet, but those who buy property there are blown away by its beaches which are lined with restaurants and bars. Espargos is the main city, but many enjoy the fishing village of Santa Maria.
Located on Sal, Cape Verde’s most developed island, Santa Maria beach runs along the south. A long sweep of golden sand, it’s a popular place for both sun worshippers and water sport enthusiasts, where over the winter months it becomes a windsurfing, kite boarding, and sailing heaven. With colourful fishing boats dotted along the shore, a fishing pier, beach bars and beautifully blue shallow water lapping up the sand, Santa Maria beach feels just like paradise.
In Praia - Every April, the tiny island capital of Cape Verde is taken over for a week by musicians of all stripes, trailing dreams of record deals and sold-out stadiums.
Two events, the Atlantic Music Expo (AME) and the more established Kriol Jazz Festival, draw talent from as far away Haiti and Brazil, intent on showing what they have to offer to international producers on an archipelago famed for its own rich musical heritage.
"During this fifth edition of the AME, foreign producers showed a lot of interest towards Cape Verdian artists like Lucibela and Os Tubaroes," said Jose da Silva, the festival's executive director, as the week drew to a close.
